Visitor Centre Renewal Project in Riding Mountain National Park

From: “Johnston, Trish (PC)” Date: January 30, 2020 at 2:18:57 PM CST
Subject: Visitor Centre Renewal project in Riding Mountain National Park

We are excited to share the news that construction on the Visitor Centre in Riding Mountain National Park will begin within the next couple of weeks!

Parks Canada is investing an unprecedented $3 billion dollars over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These investments represent the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada.

Investments in visitor infrastructure, such as the Visitor Centre, will ensure the quality and reliability of visitor facilities and continue to allow Canadians to connect with nature.

When will construction begin and when will the project be completed?
Construction is scheduled to begin in early February, 2020. The site will be most heavily impacted throughout the winter of 2020. As this work is weather dependant, there is a possibility that construction could extend to the spring of 2020. An alternative space will be used to provide visitor services and programming.

Will the construction affect visitor experience?
There will be minimal impact to visitor experience during the construction. The grounds around the Visitor Centre will be fenced off to ensure visitor safety and there will be noise associated with construction during daylight hours. A staging area for the construction company will be set up on the south side of the Visitor Centre and there will be vehicle traffic coming and going from that area and the large parking lot. The skating rink and paths behind the Visitor Centre will continue to be maintained and accessible throughout the winter.

What are the key objectives of the project?
• Renew interpretive exhibits with the following themes:
Riding Mountain is Home –
to the Anishinabe (Anishinabe Homeland),
to forest and parkland ecosystems (Wilderness Home),
to park residents (Home Away From Home),
to generations of visitors (Historic Home), and
Parks Canada protects and manages the ecosystems in the park to maintain and restore ecological integrity (Good Housekeeping).
All are welcome here.
• Renew the visitor service reception area to allow for better customer service and better visitor flow.
• Improve accessibility to the building and the grounds.
• Installing four new inclusive washroom facilities.
• Accommodate for a Parks Canada merchandise store.
• Update audio visual equipment.
• Improve the building to easily host events.
• Repair and upgrade roof with insulation.
• Installing geothermal heating and cooling.

How will Parks Canada be sharing information?
We will be sending an Info Bulletin to the media next week as well as posting regular updates on social media and our website. Follow us on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/RidingNP/ and on our website at: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/mb/riding/info/infra-prog

Water Shut Off, Pouring sidewalks, Improved Accessibility for Shower Bldg – Oct 25/2019

The following update is provided by Koreen Miko of Parks Canada:

Clear Lake Campground area update

Good Morning, with the cooler temperatures among us, our Water / Wastewater staff will be shutting off the water to the Old Campground area on Monday, October 28. By the middle of next week, they will be shutting off the individual valves in front of each cabin. The water to the shower building will still be available till November 1.

In the next couple of weeks, we intend to do some work pouring sidewalks / skirting around the shower building for improved accessibility. We do not have a specific date for this yet, however if we can’t do it this fall, and the work is pushed to next Spring, we will try to provide a couple of days notice to the Lessees.

Thank you,

Koreen Miko

Updates from this Past Weekend’s Storm & Gate Hours – October 18, 2019

The following update from Kevin Bachewich – RMNP Townsite Manager

Updates from this Past Weekend’s Storm & Gate Hours

This is the latest road report/update from this past weekend’s storm.

Moon Lake campground: Closed until further notice
WCG Otentiks: All clear.
Lake Audy road from station through to 61A: Closed.
61A from RM to Hwy 10: Opened on Tuesday. This road has been plowed and is in good shape.
Frith Beach access road : Opened up to Camp Kips.
Highway 19 : Closed. Operators opened #19 to Katherine. Arrowhead, Brûlé and Katherine are plowed out.
Rolling River road: Closed.
Clear Lake Campground : Streets open, not back lanes at this time unless required.
Townsite streets: Opened for access
North Shore Road and loops: Open

NOTE: We are not opening up any parking lots at this time, unless required. With the predicted warm weather, we are hoping mother nature will remove the snow for us. Reasoning is that we are out of high visitation and the more snow we pile up, the less chance it is going to melt. We will assess again next week and remove snow if required.

Also as a reminder, the north gate is closed for the season.
The south gate hours for the winter months are as follows:
– closed Mondays to Thursdays
– open Fridays from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm
– open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

Cabin Area Plowing – Oct 18, 2019

The following update is provided by Kevin Bachewich.

Subject: Cabin Area Plowing

Hi. Just wanted to provide a quick update that the cabin area has been opened up for access after the recent snowfall, however there may be limited access to the back lane area for most of the cabin area. We wanted to advise so there are no surprises. With the recent snowfall we have been able to open up and plow most of the core streets, however many of the back lanes in the cabin area at this time will not be plowed for the weekend so parking and front street access is limited. The snow load has been reduced significantly and everything else is as usual.

Have a great weekend.
Kevin

Water Shut Off Update – Fall 2019

The following update on water shut off was provided by Kevin Bachewich, Riding Mountain National Park Townsite Manager
“The shower building should be (operational) till Oct 31. The rest is weather dependent. We will have to close the shower building for a couple days over the next couple weeks to put a concrete skirt and sidewalks around the building for accessibility purposes. People should be able to use the campground facilities during that time if needed. Will try to give you a few days notice on that. “

A Surprise Wedding Anniversary Party at the Jamboree Hall July 27, 2019

A surprise 25th wedding anniversary party was held at the Jamboree Hall for Carol and Doug Curtis on July 27, 2019.

This is Carol-Lee and Doug’s 25th wedding anniversary. We chose to celebrate at the Jamboree Hall as they have many memories there. Their three daughters put on dance shows in the Jamboree Hall growing up in the summers as well as participated in talent shows. The Jamboree Hall was also the venue to celebrate a 50th birthday party. Carol-Lee and Doug have been coming to the Old Campground for 19 years and all of their greatest memories and friends are there. The Jamboree Hall has been such a special spot in all their lives and we loved getting to celebrate in it. – Hailey Curtis

This was a beautiful night! It was so special to celebrate my parent’s marriage in the Jamboree Hall because Clear Lake is gorgeous! The hanging lights, the music, the sunset by the water…it was a wonderful time! Mackenzie Curtis

Wedding Ceremony at the Jamboree Hall May 18, 2019

Here are a few photos from Gwenan Guillas and Miguel Letain’s wedding on May 18, 2019.

They were grade school sweethearts having met in Grade 3 but started dating about 5 years ago. The day was beautiful, if a little bit cool. A high of 9 degrees Celsius did not put a damper on the day. The active wind also contributed to some fun action shots. Both Miguel and Gwenan graduated from the University of Winnipeg this spring and have now relocated to Yellowknife where Gwenan is starting her career as teacher. Christine Harapiak and Jean-Louis Guillas, and their daughters have had a cabin in the Old Campground since 2005 and count it as one of the truly special places in the world.
